Another Day's Work

[Lightning]

Finally her night shift was over, and it was time to return back to her home. The soldier's only response was a sigh at the thought of the task she was assigned to. Guard duty again, her superior officer knew very well that this definitely wasn’t her calling.

Lightning preferred missions involved with dispatching wild fiends, not standing guard all night or day. However, she never complained, not even once. Lightning’s feelings were always set aside when it involved her job, or pretty much everything. She always accepted and completed every mission she was assigned to with pride in her work.

‘Great work Sergeant as always’ was the reply she got from her superior officer once she handed in her mission report. He aimed to praise her more as he always did especially in front of others, but the lone soldier had other plans and enough praise from him to last her a life time.

She saluted and left before he got a chance to knowing that once he got the chance, it would be difficult to stop him. Once clear from his view, she stopped to catch her breath, and to consider the two options she had. Return back home, or start on the work for her second mission early.

It took her a moment, but Lightning decided to do some extra work for another day's task. It was better to finish things then since she was already at her post. Ignoring the crowd gathering around the beach, she turned for a quick glance at her surroundings to help with the decision of where to assign the soldiers from her unit on the night of the festival.

Snow sighed heavily and smiled at his surroundings. He loved the beach. Especially at night. He was not working tonight either. So he decided to treat himself to a drink. All in a days work for a hero! He always thought that as a day ended victorious for him. He knew he had to do some thing though. Some thing even he was afraid of doing...Confronting Lightning about his and Serah's marriage again. At Lightning's birth day party things did not go down so well with the three of them. But that was only because Serah had turned L'Cie....

After he got his drink from the bar he headed out. And could watch the fire works go off. He grinned at that awe aspiring sight in front of him....He had no idea that Lightning was going to be here tonight. He was so not ready for this. But he promised Serah he would think of a way for Lightning to finally accept him. He thought after all they've been through that she would ease up on him. But would that really happen?

Then he spotted her....He sighed heavily....And punched his fist in his other palm and in haled...."Here goes nothing..." He said all full confidence...As he walked right up to her.....
"Working late?" He asked her from behind....

Lightning heard his voice and clenched her fists. Why did he have to be there, the last person she wanted to see. She knew thought the man wouldn't leave even when he was ignored. Her eyes flinched in anger once they caught sight of him and soon the soldier turned to face him. "You better have a good reason for disturbing me..." she replied her tone colder than usual.

Lightning was trying to control her temper not wanting to lose it while she still had work to finish, though that proved harder than she thought seeing as his every action irritated, and provoked her to punch him even when he stood there. Just knowing that this 'unemployed worthless man' was dating her sister filled her with rage she wasn't sure she could control.

"You better have a good reason for disturbing me..."

"Hello to you too....Disturbing....OK...What I see you are just looking at those amazing fire works....I don't believe I disturbed you....But if you wanna put it that way....OK....I'm gonna ask you what I've always asked when we run into each other....Give me your blessing to marry your sister Light...."

Snow waited and hoped for a blessing. But he knew all to well that she was still going to say no. And if she did, then he would have no choice but to take Serah and marry her behind Lightning's back....

He was going to marry Serah whether Light liked it or not! He promised Serah either way he was going to be with her. No matter what Light says....Snow was fed up just as much as Light was. But he was still not going to stop this...So Light had better get used to this....

The soldier clenched her fists obviously annoyed and irritated by Snow’s response. ‘As rude as always….’ She thought recalling the first time they met. Snow hasn’t changed since then, he was still a thickheaded stubborn worthless man in her eyes. One she would do everything she could to distance him from her sister Serah.

Her eyes flinched irritated by his words, and soon a frown crossed Lightning’s lips. She wanted nothing more than to beat him to a pulp. Every day he annoyed her with his behavior. Lightning found a few ways to control her temper, but didn’t think that would last for long.

Taking a deep breath she soon spoke with a stern, cold tone as her icy blue eyes turned to glare at him. “I have an important job to do… something I don’t expect you to understand…..” She frowned at the nickname he call her. Who ever gave him the approval to call her Light? Her anger probably didn’t go unnoticed by Snow. He was pushing his luck probably testing to see when she would lose her temper.

Her eyes turned to glance at their surrounding taking the details in while searching for her superior officer was nowhere around. One thing she was grateful for and let out soon a sigh she didn’t realize she was holding. Her eyes slowly darted back to the man she despised trying to resist the urge to punch and make a scene even when provoked.

What he said only added to her anger, as her determination about separating her sister from Snow rose to a new level. “Blessing…? I could never allow an arrogant, irresponsible, and an unemployed worthless man to ever be with my sister.”

“I warned you before to stay away from my sister… better listen or else…” One hand moved down to tape her Blaze Edge to emphasize her point. Threatening him with words didn’t work so maybe if he felt his life was in danger he would flee. Not that Lightning actually considered taking his life. Punching him yes but beyond that no. Though Snow didn’t know this so she considered it an advantage.

“I have an important job to do… something I don’t expect you to understand…..”

“Blessing…? I could never allow an arrogant, irresponsible, and an unemployed worthless man to ever be with my sister.”

“I warned you before to stay away from my sister… better listen or else…”

”Or else what?! Huh?! What are you gonna do?! Kill me? Not a very private place for a murder if you ask me!” Snow did see that she grasped her sword’s handle. But if she knew any better she wouldn’t use it on him. At least not here! What would happen to Serah and Lightning if Lightning had killed him just to keep him away from Serah? Snow knew the out come to that. Serah would never forgive her for that. ”Your sister would never forgive you if you killed me Lightning. She loves me. Admitt it!” Even Snow knew that Lightning would never admit that.

Still, Snow was not stupid. He had to keep her temper lowered. Or he might just get what was coming to him. He did want Lightning to lighten up though. Why was she so up tight all the time? Every body has some point in their life lost some one. And had to take up the responsibility of taking care of some one. But it must’ve been hard on Lightning. ”I can help you take care of Serah Lightning. Just let me!” What else could he do at this point? He sighed and looked down at his boots then. Would he ever be accepted by Lightning? Probably not. There had to be a way to prove to Lightning that he could be a protector to Serah to. So then that Light would not have to worry about her sister so much.

But even Snow knew in his heart that Serah was in love with him. And would let him be her protector. She’s always called him her hero. At least some one saw him as that. If it was not for Serah, then Snow would not have another reason for being here. And he might let Lightning kill him….He’s made so many mistakes in his life…He wants to ask for forgiveness…Especially to Lightning. She would never forgive him though. Snow was trying his best however. Even Lightning would see that if she opened those eyes of hers once! And stopped thinking about herself and her sister…..

The soldier’s eyes flickered with anger as she glared back at Snow. Was he provoking her on purpose? Did he really think she wouldn’t punch him if annoyed? Perhaps he didn’t believe her threat or assumed that she wouldn’t when others were around. Lightning sighed pausing to consider the thought of taking the threat a little further.

Her eyes maintained the glare as she stared back at Snow before taking a step closer. “I don’t care who is around in case you forgot I am a soldier…. I am aware of my surroundings and always and use them to my advantage…. If you value your life Snow I suggest you leave Serah…. ot else….” She added those words carefully punctuating them with cracking her knuckles.

He hadn’t forgotten who she was….But she probably has….But he would never tell her that…Not with the risk of getting punched again! He was trying to be careful with his words now…And she had already given him a warning. And has even suggested that she would indeed kill him in front of every one here….Even maybe in front of her Impera Officer….And Lightning was just that stubborn….He backed away from her then. He realized that he had crossed his line when he asked her about Serah….He saw that glare she gave him….That was her death glare…When she was really serious….But she was always serious! And Snow hated it! She had to loosen up some! Maybe if she had some one like he had Serah….She would understand his feelings….

”Ya know what?! You are so pig headed! Maybe if you had some one to love you would not be so against this Lightning! Wake up! And see what your sister wants…And she choose me…And if you don’t like it….Then that’s gonna be your loss!” He then spread his arm out quickly as he said that last part…and backed away again….He was ready to leave her once again with another failed attempt to get her on his side! He was fed up with her just as she was about him now!

Anger filled the soldier at the utterance Snow had made. His words pushed her to the edge, and soon rage consumed her to the point where she could no longer hold it back or control her actions. Her lips pressed firmly against each other as if forcing herself to remain quite so not to shout at the man standing in front of her. Her glare was enough to express her emotions at that point.

Her hand clinched forming a fist however despite her effort to control it. pulling her arm backwards before throwing it forward with a punch aimed at Snow. Lightning no longer cared who saw her actions. Her superior probably left the scene leaving only soldiers from her unit behind who knew very well what happened when she was provoked or angered. “I mean it Snow….” She uttered, her tone cold and harsh as her glare still focused on him. “Stay away from Serah….”

Snow just knew he had a punch coming when he said that. He saw the anger boiling in her eyes. And then it happened she punched so hard he fell to the ground on his butt! He sat up by propping his knee upwards and placing a shoulder on it...As he tasted blood in his mouth...And wiped it away.

“I mean it Snow….” “Stay away from Serah….”

Snow cut his eyes up at her this time....Still no matter what she said to him, he would keep seeing Serah regardless what she would do to him....His heart belonged with Serah...Why couldn't Lightning see that? But right now, Snow was seriously considering just giving up on Serah. This would never work out the way he had planned....But what about all that stuff he and Serah talked about?....Like having a big family....Snow wanted that more than any thing in the world....And he wanted it with Serah....

"You can hit me as long as you want....Torture me do what ever the hell you want! But it will not keep me from seeing Serah!"

Snow then got to his feet then and just stood there....There was no getting through to her.....So he would just have try again on another day....And Snow didn't want her to beat him up all around all these people! She was the only one that was able to beat him up ant way....He would definitely loose in a fight....But if it got too serious then he would defend himself at all costs....But he knew that Serah didn't want that to happen....He would just not tell her that was it....But still he didn't want to fight Lightning.....Because she was Serah's sister....So that's why he just let her push him around all this time....
