Marlene sighed as she made her way across the bar and slumped over with a frown on her face. She was so…so bleh. There were no words to describe her mood. It had started off with falling out of bed. She had just had the worst nightmare in her life. It had started with her wandering around town-because Tifa, for some reason, let her wander off alone-when she ran into Sephiroth of all people. That, alone, was enough to make it a nightmare, but it got worse from there. Not only did she run into him, but he started shouting at her, demanding that she take him to Cloud. Of course, she was going to try and be brave, refusing to do so with a stamp of her foot. That was, quite possibly, the worst thing she could have down. He picked her up by the back of her dress and held her up as if she were some puppy about to be scolded.
Of course, she closed her eyes as tight as she possibly could. But, when she opened them again, it wasn’t Sephiroth standing in front of her. It was Kadaj holding her up! He had a vicious smile on his face, and Yazoo and Loz were standing behind him with equally vicious smiles. (Although, Yazoo’s looked forced and Loz’s was mixed with a confused smile.) She screamed loudly, but no one on the street seemed to notice her. When she finally managed to pull herself out of the dream, she was on the ground and in tears. Not wanting anyone to see her, she got dressed in her favorite dress, managed to put the ribbon in her hair somehow, and slowly descended down the stairs only to realize no one was around. So, yes, Marlene Wallace was in a very bad mood and there was no one around to cheer her up. She couldn’t help but wonder where Tifa and Cloud were, or even Denzel. Denzel was always there when she needed him, mostly.
“Where is everyone?”

The Great Warrior "It's the way of the warrior." (OOC: I hope you don't mind I joined as Nanaki.) The city of Edge. It was here that Nanaki had found himself setting foot in once again. Hopefully, his experience since last time will be more pleasant. Last time, he had been forced to run because Shinra blamed Cloud's group for a blown up building of their's. Since then, Shinra had seemed to lose interest in chasing after them. Apparently, they discovered that it had not been they who blew up that building of their's. That was good. Nanaki was worried about those that lived here in the city. It must've been really rough on them with Shinra's stronghold being here. It had to be at least a month since Nanaki had been here last.
Red XIII paid no mind to the curious and scared humans when they watched him wander into their midst. His destination was the 7th Heaven. He had been meaning to see Cloud, Tifa, Denzel and Marlene for some time but every time he got here, he always seemed to just miss them. Anyone that looked at the red and orange furred critter would automatically find themselves confused as to what he was. He looked like a cat but also like a wolf. Just what was Nanaki? A dog and cat species?
What was more peculiar about him was the flaming tail tip, his scarred eye so he had only one open and the tattoos and gold braces. Looking at him, one would think of Indians almost. Having come from Cosmo Canyon, it was no surprise Nanaki would have feathers in his mane giving him an Indian-like look. In Nanaki's people's culture, it was the look of a warrior. The feathers only indicating just how much the warrior had experienced in his life time and how honorable he was. Not relying on his sense of smell, since Edge was full of all kinds of scents other than the one he was looking for, he made his way by memory toward 7th Heaven.
"I hope they're here this time." Seeing the bar door, he padded up to it and gave it a nudge with his nose. Surprisingly, the door was unlocked and it swung open, admitting him inside. Walking in, Nanaki looked around with his only good eye. It was orange and yellow in color, almost amber.
"Hello? Is anyone home?" he inquired. Where in his kind's standards he was more like a teenager, his voice sounded otherwise. His voice was much deeper and made him sound like he was in his forties by human standards. "I hope I'm not intruding...the door was unlocked so I thought it was okay!" he said to himself, looking around. Marlene had been in his blind side but as he turned to get a better look around, he finally found her there slumped.
"Marlene?" he inquired but got excited seeing her as he galloped over to her. "Marlene, it's good to see you again!" he said, his voice sounding gleeful. Seeing the way she was though, he then got the feeling that something was wrong.
"Is there...something the matter?"

She really should get used to being alone, Marlene mused. It seemed like, these days, Denzel was more interested in playing with boys his age instead of her, Cloud was always on some sort of delivery that he simply could not take her with, and Tifa was…well, she didn’t know where Tifa was. Her older motherly figure was usually around when she woke up. Scratch that, Tifa was always around when she needed her, especially if it was because of some nightmare. The young girl buried her head in her arms and stifled a sniff. She thought she was done with the nightmares since the actual beings there had been gone for so long. And, actually, she wondered why she found Kadaj and his group a lot scarier than she found Sephiroth? She didn’t know, and she didn’t think she wanted to know. Perhaps, it had something to do with the fact that she was never the one dealing with Sephiroth. She had never had a legitimate conversation with him whereas she had had to face Kadaj in person while trying to save Denzel. She shook her head, trying to rid herself of the memory. She hated it with a passion and she always found herself freaked out. She stifled another sob and tried to wipe the tears off of her face before anyone else saw.
Despite what people thought of her, Marlene was still a little kid. She still got scared easily and trembled at the sight of something that frightened her. Just because she was responsible enough to run the bar while Tifa and them were out did not mean she was brave. She wished her dad was around so she would have someone to be around all today. She didn’t want to be alone. She wanted to have someone to talk to, to laugh with, and to generally keep her mind off of the fact that the threat of Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz was still very much at large, despite the fact that she hadn’t seen them around. Sometimes, when Tifa and Cloud thought she was asleep, Marlene would creep and listen in on their conversations. She heard about the things they feared, the things they fought about-since they didn’t have the courage to fight in front of her after the last time she got on them-, and the things they hoped for in the future.
She was just about to get lost in her mind when she heard someone talk from behind her. Someone had entered the bar, although she didn’t want to lift her head and actually see who it was. If it were Cloud, Tifa, or Denzel, then they would see her-probably-and ask her what was wrong. And, then, she would tell them. But, she wouldn’t say a thing until they were at her side. Still, when she began to recognize the voice, she lifted her head off of her arms. The last time she had heard that voice was a month ago, if she remembered correctly. Slowly, she made sure her face was clean of any tears before turning around. Once the figure caught her eyes, she grinned and jumped off the bar stool, throwing her arms over him once he was at her side. “Red!” She grinned, stepping back to get another look at him. Yep, he was still as red as ever and still bigger than her. Although, she didn’t take too much offense to that. Everyone that came over to the bar was bigger than her in some way or another. To put it lightly, Marlene was short. She flushed in embarrassment when he asked her what was wrong and gave a small shrug. “I’m fine! Don’t worry. I just had a nightmare and, when I woke up, no one else was here.”

The Great Warrior "It's the way of the warrior." Nanaki's tail wagged rapidly behind him when Marlene put her arms around him. He always loved spending time with the younger humans. He related to them better despite his intelligence. Marlene especially was a sweet child. He could easily get along with her. Red XIII was very happy to see her again. Even if they had seen each other a month ago, it was still exciting to be seeing her again. They were friends after all. Looking at her, he could tell she had appeared to be distressed a little earlier. Yet, she now had a smile on her face and looked less troubled. He hoped that he helped her come out of it.
Cocking his head as he sat on his haunches by her side to listen to what she was telling him, Nanaki thought of what the best response to that would be. Why hadn't Tifa, Cloud or Denzel been there for her? It sounded rather fishy to him. Poor Marlene had a nightmare too! She must've been really scared upon waking, whatever it had been. Seeing no one around probably only added on to that. Well, there was one thing he could do and that was help comfort the little girl. He held a concerned look on his face as he peered up at her.
"Ah, so you had a nightmare?!" he repeated. Nanaki remembered the times when he had them. He knew how it felt to wake up troubled and not have someone there to reassure you that everything will be alright. Gilligan especially had arose from some of his nightmares in the past. The thought of losing everyone because of their shorter lives had bothered Nanaki. Still, he had learned to come to terms with that fear. He would enjoy what time his friends had with him to the fullest. "Do not fear your dreams, Marlene."
His voice was rather calm and delicate despite sounding like a forty year old man with an accent. "It was only just a dream." That was his way of reassuring her that it would be okay. "Besides, you have all of us to take care of you. I assure you that while I'm here, I'll chase anything off that dares try to hurt you!" he said bravely and honestly. Nanaki would defend any of his friends with a passion.

Marlene smiled weakly and scratched her cheek, nervously. That was easy for him to say, all right. She loved hanging out with him because it was always fun, even if he was older than both her and Denzel. Still, he was tough and probably didn’t have nightmares like she did. And, even if he did, she doubted they were about those three brothers! How could she be anything but afraid when they constantly haunted her dreams? Still, she couldn’t help but feel sorry for them. Considering how they had been born-she really shouldn’t listen in on Tifa and Cloud, but it was hard for her not to some times since they made it so easy-it was sad that they had had to die so early. They probably didn’t even understand the things they were doing most of the time.
“Yeah, I had a nightmare. I’ve had them before, and I know it’s a little sad that I’m this old and am still being scared by them, but they’re realllllly bad.” She said, accenting the l in really to add more emphasis. Still, sometimes they weren’t nightmares because she had woken up scared. Sometimes, she just considered them that way because she had woken up crying. It was like that other time where she had woken up crying because she thought she had seen some weird lady who kind of looked like her talking to her. But, when she woke up and tried to picture the face, she could never remember what the lady looked like, or even what the lady would tell her. Other times, she would wake up worrying about where her dad was because she had had some weird nightmare.
The last time one of those dreams had happened, she would wake up and make Tifa, or Cloud if she saw him first, call him so that she could call him and make sure he was okay. Denzel rolled his eyes at her antics sometimes. And, as much as she loved her friend, she didn’t think he understood. For the most part, he wasn’t really himself when Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz were alive. And, sure, she was still sketchy at the memories, but that didn’t make them any less real. “You remember what we went through, right?” She asked, knowing full well that he knew. “I have nightmares about them. About…about Kadaj and his brothers and Sephiroth.” She could feel her bottom lip trembling a little, but she quickly shook her head and smiled at him.
“I know that it was only a dream, but sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s visions in the past in my sleep and I always wonder what would have happened to me and Denzel if Cloud hadn’t saved me.” She gulped, but she felt better knowing that he was there with her. He wouldn’t let anything happen to me. And, when he stated so, she giggled and nodded her head. “Of course! Anyone that would try to mess with you, Red, is silly and they’d never be able to defeat you!” She giggled again.

The Great Warrior "It's the way of the warrior." Red XIII cocked his head as he heard what Marlene said about the nightmares. That it was bad that she was being affected by them at her current age. Honestly, he didn't see anything wrong with having a nightmare at any age. Nanaki knew he had his own share of nightmares despite his age. Really bad dreams were enough to scare anyone, bad dreams in general did that to someone. People just tended to keep quiet about it though.
"There is nothing wrong with getting scared over a scary dream. People of all ages including I, have nightmares, Marlene. People do feel scared by them but not all adults speak of them." It was his way of assuring her that even at her age, this was a normal reaction. Nanaki had a few dreams that startled even him upon waking hours. If it was really bad, he would take some time to think logically on it all and see if it were worth worrying about coming true. If he believed it would come true, then he would see what he could do to prevent them from happening. That was just how Nanaki worked.
Marlene was still young, so it wasn't a wonder that she would get really affected by them. It was perfectly normal for human behavior. It wasn't long before Marlene asked him if he remembered what they all had been through. Oh yes, he remembered quite well what the gang had gone through. They saved the planet twice altogether. "I remember very well what we have all gone through."
It was Kadaj and his brothers as well as Sephiroth that Marlene had been having nightmares about. Nanaki could see why the girl was so frightened. Nanaki would be afraid if he had a dream of them as well. "I see now why you would be scared." He nodded his head at that because it was good reason to be afraid. When Marlene explained her dreams were more like visions of her past sometimes, Nanaki mulled it over in his mind.
"I believe that it's because you still remember those times. Do not be afraid anymore, Marlene. Cloud and Tifa, your father and all of us stopped Sephiroth and we stopped Kadaj and his brothers. We will do it again if they ever do appear again. You have my word on it." They were just dreams though. He could see why she was afraid of what could've happened. It had been a very close call for the children when they had been involved.
It didn't take long before Marlene's mood became uplifted. Hearing Nanaki talk about how he'd chase anyone off if they tried to hurt her amused her. Yes, anyone being chased by a creature like Red XIII would certainly be scare out of their wits. He smiled brightly hearing her response to his words. "Of course, that is the sign of a great warrior. I would defend you and the others with all I had!" he told her.
"So, do not be afraid, Marlene. With a friend like me, I won't allow them to hurt you."
