Appearance
Red XIII is a dark red and orange furred creature that appearance wise, resembles a lion but does have dog characteristics such as barking. His nose is pitch black. His right eye appears to have a nasty scar running through it making it impossible for him to see with that eye. He always has the right eyelid closed. His other eye is or appears to be a golden orange coloring.
From his forehead to just between his shoulders, Red has a brown mane that is short and stands up straight on him for the most part. The front forming a slight fringe as it cascades about on his forehead. Two rather thick parts of his mane, are tied into ponytails on either side of his head and hang from his head. Beads help hold the tufts of mane in place. On either side of his head, he wears two identical feathers in his mane. No matter how fast he runs or jerks his head, they will stay on. Usually, for weaponry, Red wears a headress on his head in that general area.
On all four of his legs, he wears golden braces. All exactly identical to one another. On his back hind leg, his right one near the rump is some kind of strange brand. On his right front leg's shoulder region, there is the tattoo 'XIII'. It's the very same tattoo that Hojo had given him when experimenting on him. This tattoo is why he has the nickname Red XIII. Just below that tattoo is yet another odd brand but no real significance to it.
His tail tip is constantly alight with flame. He stands at three feet and nine inches. Weight wise, he has to be around two hundred pounds. Appearance wise, he looks like a lion but moves around like a dog and at times does dog-like things such as yelping, barking, or howling like one. His species isn't exactly known but for the most part he resembles a feline much like a lion despite the dog-like characteristics.
Personality:
Red XIII is a brave soul. He also has a very strong sense of honor. He is definitely a warrior befitting of Seto's son. He has an intellect far greater than a human being's. Red's very polite to those around him. Usually, he's a quiet individual, only speaking if he feels it's necessary but yet still more talkative than some friends of his. It's because of his silent demeanor, it's never easy to guess his true character half the time.
Having lived for so long and having lived in Cosmo Canyon, Red has a great knowledge of the Planet. Usually being the silent type, he takes the time to check all surroundings and is thus far more observant than most. Due to his youth, he has quite the curiosity. It's because of this curiosity that he travels far and wide around the planet learning of the creatures that live in different areas of it. It's due to the fact it's what his grandfather had wanted him to do.
Nanaki has great pride when it comes to the memory of his father and mother. At first, he had once thought little of his father, Seto but upon learning the truth there's no greater warrior he could truly look up to other than his close human friends. He has a deep loyalty to his friends and would be the first to rush in and give aid where it's needed.
He seems to be somewhat fond enough to allow Cait Sith to hitch a ride on his back when rushing into battle. In battle, Red is quite fierce and can be quite a beast. That just shows where even though he can interact with humans and have human friends, he's not really human but because of his intelligence he neither fits into the beast category.
Nanaki doesn't like Cosmo Canyon much due to the extreme heat there. Upon winning a battle, he will either howl or roar with pride. He also doesn't seem to like humans all that much and it leads back to when he was mistreated by them when Hojo experimented on him in the past.
When around others, Nanaki is rather quiet and merely takes in what's going on around him. When others meet him, they don't realize that he has the ability to speak and find themselves rather shocked when he opens up his mouth and speaks. When with his friends, Nanaki's more childish side comes out at times as well as his warrior nature when they need his help. Red seems to follow around the younger figures of the group which also indicates just how young he really is even though his intelligence and maturity state otherwise.
Nanaki sees himself as a respectable warrior. A true warrior that won't back down from a fight. A son worthy of his parents' honor. On occassion he has difficulty in being the way he is since where he has intellect to be able to interact with humans, he doesn't really fit in their society being an animal. Being an animal, he has difficulty really seeing himself as that way due to the fact no other animals other than the human species has an intelligence almost like his own. It's due to this that sometimes Nanaki finds himself at odds with himself. Still, he does have the determination to try things such as actually getting himself a cell phone or walking on his hind legs which he has done once.
History:
Nanaki was born in Cosmo Canyon to his father, Seto and to his mother whose name remains unknown to this very day. During that time, their tribe was at war with the Gi tribe. It had been his parents' job to protect the village being the guardians of Cosmo Canyon. It is believed that Nanaki's species were the villages sacred gaurdians despite there being only just a few of them left in the world.
Having known a ploy to attack Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki's father had set off to stop the Gi tribe in their tracks in the tunnels below Cosmo Canyon. Leaving Nanaki's mother to care of him while he was just a newborn. It was unknown to anyone save for Nanaki's mother and Bugenhagen what happened down there. Where Nanaki thought his father had abandoned them when they needed him most like a coward, Seto had actually stopped the Gi tribe in their tracks down below all alone. It was until the arrows that had pierced his thick hide that he no longer moved as they petrified him on the top of the cliff, watching that passage into Cosmo Canyon forever.
Not having known the brave act his father had done, Nanaki grew up thinking his father had been a coward. His mother having died before Nanaki could ask her about him. Being raised by Bugenhagen, a human his parents had been rather fond of in the past, Nanaki never revealed his feelings of dislike he had for his own father. Bugenhagen never knew about how Nanaki felt but had some suspicion. Unfortunately, he couldn't show Nanaki until he was older and ready to face the restless ghosts of the Gi tribe to look upon his father's remains poised upon the cliff. Bugenhagen had made that last promise to Nanaki's mother and Seto.
When fifty years had passed since then, Nanaki had to perform a rite to appease the planet. The very thought had made him uneasy simply because Red XIII wasn't sure if he could do it. The female accompanying him at the time was Deneh, a female of Red's species that still remains unknown to this day though many assume some sort of lion. It was then that Nanaki met up with the Turks, Hojo wanted a specimen from Cosmo Canyon and unfortunately, Deneh and Nanaki were the ones they came across.
Nanaki defended Deneh, proving he wasn't a coward so that she could escape but he had lost to the Turks. Seeing how Nanaki acted, the Turks were nice enough to at least allow him to perform the ritual with Deneh before taking him with them. During that painful year, Nanaki endured much experimenting done on him by Professor Hojo. It was from Hojo he had obtained the tatoo that is his alias 'Red XIII'. The name has no meaning to Nanaki but his friends call him by it.
It wasn't until about one year later when Red XIII first met Cloud's gang. Hojo had attempted to cross Nanaki's species with Aerith's. Of course, Nanaki had no intentions of that happening and merely pretended to act interested in Aerith to provide a distraction. During that time, some sort of gas thing took place in the glass container they were in concealing them. It was then that Red XIII waited patiently for Hojo to try and open the glass door. Once he did, Red XIII dived out, attacking Hojo.
Once that had been done, Red XIII apologized to Aerith for the act revealing that he could speak human and had an intelligence far beyond that of any human. It was then that Red XIII offered to go with Cloud's gang as long as Cosmo Canyon.
When the group finally reached it, it was by chance when the dune buggy they were driving broke down. It was at Cosmo Canyon where the gang rest for a time. There, it was learned that Red XIII's true name was Nanaki and the village's elder, Bugenhagen, was Red's adoptive grandfather. There, they also learned that where Red's voice was deeper than a human's and he was 48 years according to human years, his species' true age was equivalent to a human teenager's age about fifteen or sixteen. That he was also a species nearly endangered that were the guardians of Cosmo Canyon. Not once had he told the group about himself or his past until then.
During the discussion with Bugenhagen, upon mention of Nanaki's father, Red XIII was quick to insult his father's name in front of Bugenhagen. Finally learning the true nature of Nanaki's feelings toward his father, Bugenhagen lead the group through a once sealed underground cavern. Traveling through there, they learned that the spirits of the Gi tribe haunted the place making the path dangerous. All the while, Bugenhagen gave little snippets of things that had happened back then.
After a nasty battle with a Gi spirit, the back of the pathway is made accessible. It is here where Red XIII finds his father's petrified remains and learns the truth about his father. That instead of fleeing like a coward, Seto single handedly took out the Gi tribe trying to enter through this cavern and still remained to this day overlooking the path, guarding Cosmo Canyon despite being petrified. Learning the truth caused Nanaki to drop what past feelings he had toward his father and vow to become a warrior worthy of his father's son. As Nanaki howled at the moon, Seto's remains shed tears upon having heard the vow.
Later, Bugenhagen joins Cloud's group to reveal the true nature of Holy and what Aerith had attempted to do for the gang before her death, revealing Sephiroth was preventing Holy being unleashed. After the trip to the Forgotten Capital and the defeat of Diamond Weapon, Bugenhagen finally returned to Cosmo Canyon. It was then that he fell mortally ill. Distressed, Red XIII rushed to find him as the gang hung back, allowing them time to themselves. It was Bugenhagen that told Nanaki that he would prefer it if he left Cosmo Canyon to see the world outside and learn every secret there was to planet life. Upon his grandfather's death, Nannaki promised that he would. It was here that Nanaki gained his resolve to protect the planet since it is the basis of all life on it.
Joining Cloud and the gang, Red XIII helps defeat Sephiroth in the Northern Crater. With Sephiroth defeated, Red XIII watched with the rest of the gang as Meteor is narrowly stopped by Holy with the aid of the Lifestream thanks to Aerith's help.
Two years later, Nanaki visited Cid from time to time. Showing he was still living out the final promise he made to his grandfather. During just before the events of Advent Children, Nanaki was finally being called by his friends as his actual name, dropping Red XIII as his alias and now becoming officially Nanaki to them. During his travels, Nanaki would tell stories to the village children back in Cosmo Canyon, teaching them about planet life.
During the times he left Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki was experiencing a deep feeling of loneliness for every day he reminded himself that his long life would eventually cause him great loss. The loss of his friends whom had much shorter lifespans. It was this feeling he dubbed Gilligan just for the sake of remembering it. It was during an encounter with Vincent that Red XIII learned that Gilligan was his fear of loss for the friends he now had and living a lonely life. Vincent eventually encouraged Nanaki claiming one day he would probably have children of his own and not be lonely while also claiming out of their friends that he would remain even beyond Nanaki's time. It was this that gave Nanaki a better view about the future and caused him to stop worrying about it.
Not long after, Nanaki helped Yuffie rescue someone by the name of Yuri. Traveling with Yuffie aboard Cid's Shera, it leads to how the three enter the storyline of Advent Children during the time where Bahamut Sin had been wreaking havoc. With Cait Sith on his back, Red XIII ran right into battle, attacking the renegade summon. Once Bahamut Sin was defeated, Red watched with the rest of the gang as Cloud took on Kadaj and eventually, Sephiroth.
When Sephiroth was defeated, it had been Nanaki in Aerith's old church that reminded Cloud that there were still children infected with the Geostigma.
Afterwards, in Dirge of Cerberus, not much of Nanaki is seen except for at the end where he's seen resting upon Cloud's and Tifa's stoop at the new 7th Heaven.
As of right now, Red XIII known as Nanaki now, travels the planet larning the things that he can. Occassionally paying a visit to his old friends from time to time. His knowledge of what the Fal'Cie are trying to do to the planet along with others is not yet accomplished but once it's unveiled it is obvious he won't allow it.
Abilities:
1. Sled Fang: As a blue aura radiates about Red in three strands, he dashes at the enemy attacking them with his teeth and claws. Can be done once before he must wait three posts until he can try it again.
2.Blood Fang: Very much like Sled Fang, an aura revolves around Red as he dashes at a foe. However, the color of the aura is red this time around. When he attacks the foe with his teeth and claws once, he also manages to heal himself a little bit and regenerate his energy minorly. Like, if he was damaged by say half, he'd be able to absorb at least a third of the half of the damage he recieved. Same goes for energy. Just like Sled Fang, he can only perform this attack once but must wait five posts until he can try this again.
3. Stardust Ray: Red XIII howls at the skies above. In doing so, small little stars drop from on high at the enemies dealing individually minor damage. Only a total of 30 stars fall from the sky and this lasts for three posts. Can be easily dodged and blocked if one were to use a magical barrier to shield themselves from it. It only surrounds a ten foot diameter around Red XIII and it cannot harm him or his companions. This can only be done once a battle.
4. Earth Rave: Becoming wrathful, Red XIII's strength in attack doubles for this as he attacks one or two enemies. He can only do 5 strikes with this total so even if he attacked 2 enemies, that doesn't mean he attacks each five times, just that he'll perform maybe three strikes at one and two at another for example. Once he's finished attempting to strike 5 times, he must wait a total of six posts to attempt it again.
5. Cosmo Memory: Howling at Cosmo Canyon, no matter where he is in the Planet, Red XIII can summon a large plasma beam to fire at all or one of his enemies to deal massive damage. The beam itself is only 5 feet in diameter and can only shoot in a straight line. Easily avoidable but not safe to attempt blocking unless you're at Sephiroth's level. Can only do this once a battle and to signify he is howling to Cosmo Canyon as fair warning to his foes, a faded image behind him of Cosmo Canyon will appear and begin to light up with several spheres behind him as they conjoin to form the single large beam.
Summons: None
Magic: Fire: Regularly, Nanaki can send a single fireball at his opponents. Fire ball is melon sized and causes only minor damage if the enemy is hit.
Strengths: Red's great for physical battles. He tends to always run in with a quick attack, head on.
Weaknesses: His allies, if any are in danger and held hostage he would do anything to protect them or save them. Doesn't have an opposable thumb like humans and can't fight with hand weapons. Wears no armor so is pretty vulnerable in that aspect too. Magical battles might be a problem.
Weapon Head Dress
Crushes: None although some might assume it's Deneh since she was the only female of his species ever revealed in Before Crisis.

Role Play Sample:
Red XIII growled to himself with frustration. It had only been fifteen minutes but he still managed to waste all that time trying to dial a simple cell phone number. It was one of the many things Nanaki struggled with during his every day life. Where he had no opposable thumb and was an animal, he was more intelligent than any human being. It was because of this that he tended to get stuck struggling with something as simple as dialing a phone number. "Accursed paws!" he grumbled, once again clumsily pressing another button adjacent to the actual one he intended to press due to larger digits than a scrawny human's finger.
He had it rested on the ground while his paws made their futile attempts to punch in the number he wanted. It was a wonder how he managed to punch the numbers in like he did this way, especially when the digits were much thicker than a human's.
He knew if he kept at it, he would eventually get it right. One time, he almost thought he got it when someone else answered on the other line. It was to his dismay that he found he had dialed the wrong number. Instead of getting Cid Highwind on the line, he got some hard of hearing elderly woman that no matter how loud he shouted, didn't hear his apology for calling the wrong number. "I APOLOGIZE FOR DIALING THE WRONG NUMBER!" he shouted one final time, finding he was not getting anywhere with this. Feeling rather ashamed, because he had such a polite nature, Nanaki hung up the phone on her when she called 'Hello' one last time into the reciever.
"This is more trouble than it's worth!" he mumbled, tapping in the phone number once more. Finally, this time around, he got it right. Excitedly, Red XIII wagged his tail when he heard Cid's voice on the other end.
"Hello, Cid. This is Nanaki!" he spoke into the receiver of the phone. Hearing Cid's words of delight despite the usual foul language that accompanied it, Red XIII couldn't help but smile a bit to himself. On a level of intelligence, Red XIII often found himself conversing and hanging around Cid the most out of the gang. Cid was a mechanical genius where as Red XIII was a genius of experience and books. Never before did Nanaki think he'd find himself speaking with Cid more than the others.
"Would you mind if I hitched a ride with you to Edge?" he questioned the foul mouthed pilot. "I wish to pay it a visit."
There was a strange uproar in the background where Cid was eventually forced to pay attention to what was going on at his end of the line. The racket was so bad, Red XIII assumed something had gone seriously wrong. Sure enough, no longer getting a response from Cid and hearing those that caused whatever it was on the other end of the line made Red XIII let out a furious roar into the reciever. It was apparent by the yelp of surprise that someone had heard him as they scurried to turn the phone off. It was then that Red XIII knew something was amiss and a friend needed his help.
The problem was finding Cid. Hopefully, he wasn't that far from Rocket Town as Red XIII turned his back on the mountain range he was on and made a dash in the direction of where Rocket Town lay. Hopefully, when he got there, Nanaki would find Shera and she would be able to tell him where Cid had gone last. Those foes would regret the day they messed with Nanaki's friend for he was a great warrior!
