Army Of One”It’s not a question of can or can’t, there are some things in life you just do.” With a simple nod at Blint’s response, Lightning then picked her pace back up to the quicker stride she had once before. Hopefully this wasn’t going to be a long trip, this kid (yes, she called him a kid even though he was like a year younger than her) had a family to return to. Lightning herself had one but Serah was busy with Snow, probably planning their wedding or something. Hopefully no one noticed her absence, she didn’t want to get word that Serah went out looking for Lightning and got herself hurt, or something along the lines of Snow looking for her, that’d be weird, but then again, she wanted everyone to just stay put with their family and let her take care of the beasts from the Whitewood, do what she was great at and that was protecting the Cocoon citizens.
There wasn’t much more she was leaving behind. Fang and Vanille were off doing their own thing, probably on Gran Pulse or something, Sazh had his son to look after, and Hope and his father were starting to become more close, like a family, Lightning was sort of feeling out of the family loop, though the group as a whole was like a family to her, but still…she didn’t really have anyone to talk to about it. Serah was always with Snow, and so on. She knew she was too cold and hard headed to really reach out for anyone, so she’d have to deal with whatever ‘family’ she had now, and appreciate what she had. It wasn’t something she necessarily thought about a lot, but there was the occasional thought of where she would end up in the future…probably still cold and fighting like she was now. It didn’t sound so bad to her for now.
Keeping the silence going, Light flickered her eyes back and forth across the scenery as the once beach full of shops and shacks started to fade into just a plain sandy and somewhat grassy beach. The start of wilderness, no one had set up shop around here so this was a good sign, getting across Bodhum’s shore wouldn’t take too long, and soon it would lead into the major outskirts of the vile peaks which were still miles off from where they were now. Keeping her moves in sync, Lightning still kept point and continued to walk, knowing where she was going due to her many battles with the Guardian Corps, she’d been to the Vile Peaks on missions before, not the mention being dragged across them during the time of the Purge, but then again, there were still area’s unexplored. It was a giant scrap site and who knows what else would be out there waiting for them.
“I’m guessing you’ve never been out this way before.” Light said cocking her head to the side a bit to see Blint out of the corner of her eyes. Her expression was still blank, yet a bit of determination was struck on her face as she thought of what would happen after they did indeed make it through the Whitewood. Probably find the maintenance HQ and activate the gates and all the other boundary forces that kept the creatures locked inside…at least that was her best guess as to what to do. From there, no idea, probably return to Bodhum and see what else needed to be done, to keep the places safe and secure while PSICOM and the GC (Guardian Corps) were reviving their forces. Blint was glad that the beach was becoming less sandy and was starting to get some foliage. He hated to be worried about something so small, but if the wind did pick-up or if he fell then he would have to make sure that no sand got into his arm. It got into everything so that was a big task, and going into a fiend infested area with only one arm was not a pleasant thought.
It seemed that his head was always off someplace when somebody started to speak to him, and this time was no different. He brought his eyes up from the sand and looked at Lighting as she spoke.
He nodded then spoke not sure if she could see him, even with her head tilted. "No, I can't say that I have. I've spent most of my time in the city, mostly because I've had no real reason to leave it."
Even as he started to speak, Blint wondered why he had never left the city. What he said was true. He had no reason to leave, but he was always interested in what was outside of the city limits. So why hadn't he gone out to satisfy his curiousity? His family. He had to stay and provide for his brother and father. Soon though that would come to end. James would be able to take care of himself and his father would hopefully move on.

As the ground shifted from Sand, to sandy grass, to grass, Lightning kept silent. Sure the scenery was changing bit by bit, but that didn’t mean anything. Being out of people’s vision didn’t mean that things would be easy from here on out, it meant that wildlife or even PSICOM could pop out of nowhere, assuming the worst, at least that is what PSICOM would do. Remembering Lightning’s face, her as a L’Cie would really put Blint and herself in a tight spot with the sanctum army, that was one thing Lightning didn’t want to have to deal with this time around…but there was no telling what would happen now was there? As the toes of her leather boots scuffed against the grassy sand before coming across to just grass and dirt, Lightning kept her eyes open and was alert for anything. Any slight rustle in the trees or bushes, she caught sight of it kept her hands at her sides, close to her gunblade as she kept point, still walking farther and farther away from the seaside city of Bodhum.
“Well then…this should be a good experience for you.” Lightning commented quietly as she didn’t even turn her head to try and look back at Blint. She knew that he was probably listening a little and would catch whatever she was saying eventually, no need to see if he was even paying attention or not. It wasn’t as if her words were all that important anyways. “Stay sharp. Keep alert and make sure to observe everything. We don’t want to get ambushed out here.” She said in her dull monotone as they continued on. Silent it was outside, not a growl from a creature or a gun fired off…it was quite peaceful. The only sound in the air was the tweets of birds and the sound of breathing from the two…and perhaps a few scuffled footsteps in the grass. Almost relaxing…the scenery slowly shifted again, from bright green grass and trees, almost like a foresty area, the ground turned dark and dead. Mud covered most of the area and it seemed the skies were darkening. That wasn’t good. Lightning stopped and placed a hand on her hip as she looked at the sky. “We have to pick up the pace if we want to get to some sort of shelter before it starts raining.” She said before starting off again, this time at a faster pace.
The tweeting and sweet sounds of birds died out as silence was once again the key component around here. The scenery had turned darker and gloomy, almost muddy and the ground beneath Lightning’s feet began to make a squish sound. Mud, rain, lovely, this was awesome. Finally, after walking a little bit into the more mud filled area leading towards the outskirts of the vile peaks, still miles away over from the vast scrap yard, Lightning stopped and listened carefully, not saying a word, not moving a muscle as she simply let her eyes flicker around every which way as she finally moved a hand to the side, signaling Blint to stop moving. As her gaze scanned over everything in sight she heard faint sounds in the distance, footsteps in this squishy ground, that was a helpful tool for her. If she heard correctly, the footsteps sounded more like marches. In a really low whisper she looked back at Blint and started to speak. “I have a feeling PSICOM is ahead…we have to be very quiet…and maybe if we’re lucky we can maneuver around them without being spotted.” She spoke quietly before turning back ahead and carefully taking a step forward trying to find the driest land where she could reach to take a step. “No need to end up eating lead for careless mistakes.” She grumbled taking the next step just as careful hoping Blint would be just as quiet.
With each step being cautious, Light made her way to a dry patch of land that wouldn’t be so…squishy and she leaned her back against a tree, staring off to the side in the direction that they needed to go to proceed to the vile peaks. “PSICOM doesn’t usually patrol down here…I wonder what they are looking for…” she questioned mostly to herself but any input would be taken into her thoughts as she listened for more footsteps, rather that she heard rustling in the bushes nearby. Not waiting to see what it was Lightning pulled out her gunblade and it made a sharp sound as it unfolded into blade form and she stepped forward, probably making more sound than she had In the past few minutes. Suddenly…a small rodent squeaked its way out of the bushes and then footsteps were heard again, this time coming their way. Well, that blew it. Lightning had assumed the worst and gotten PSICOM’s attention. “Great…” she really didn’t think that one through, oh well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words: 931 Muse: Pretty good actually! Telling a mechanic to observe everything around him was like telling a person to breathe. It was going to happened whether he thought about it or not. Sure his mind worked a little differently, but he always paid attention to all of the details. Even if his mind drifted a little he still heard the sounds of the world around him, and noticed everything going on around him. Unless he was thinking about a project. Then he was focused on all of the parts and how they needed to go together in order to work. He almost said all of this out loud, but Lightning stopped in front of him. Blint was about to ask why they had stopped, but she answered the came out of her mouth before he even got the chance to ask and was on the move again. He shook his head and started to walk again, staying just a couple steps behind Lightning.
He kept his ears and eyes open as they moved through the trees. Trying to spot anything out of the ordinary, but to be honest, he really had no idea what he was looking for. Slowly things went from tall trees and green bushes to dead falling from bare trees. The first change he noticed as they hiked through the woods was the change in light. Before things were a little dark but it was mostly just shadows from the canopy with noticeable light rays cutting through the leaves. Now everything seemed to be cast in a dull, gray light. He also noticed that his recently cleaned boots were now soiled with mud. That was one more thing to add to his already long list of things to-do. Which he had blown off only hours before. He stopped walking when Lighting did. ”Why are…” Again she answered his question before he could even finish, and finally he noticed the unnatural stillness surrounding them.
She was the one with the military training so Blint nodded, straining to hear what she did. Soon he heard the same steps that she had. Silently cursing himself for not noticing the marching sooner, he quickly looked around for the best way out. Before him was a dead forest full of nothing but dead leaves and mud. Not really the best thing if you wanted to hide. If they wanted to go unnoticed then it seemed the best way to go would be up, into the trees. They could try to sneak around the squad, but if that squad happened across their steps then it would just be a simple matter of following them. Then all PSICOM had to do was follow them until they made camp and kill himself and Lightning as they slept. Blint really didn’t want to die in his sleep. Well he didn’t want to die at all, but that was beside the point.
Seeing Lightning move, carefully, to a dry patch of land, he thought it a good idea and followed. Stepping where she did and trying to stay as quite as possible. He never noticed how much noise a small step could make before now. He heard everything Lightning said but just nodded. If silence was key right now then it wasn’t a good idea to voice his thoughts right now. If those Lobos from before were in fact escaped experiments then it would only make since that PSICOM would be looking for it’s lost property. He flinched when he heard her weapon, and sure enough they heard it too. After what seemed to be the longest few seconds in his life, the sound of steps started to come their way. In a low, rushed whisper. ”Stay here, I’ll be right back.” Blint hoped she listened to him.
He wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing, but during the countless sparing sessions he had been through, his father had drilled it into his head that information was crucial in any fight. In this case climbing the tree to find out exactly what they were facing seemed to be the fastest way to get the info that they needed. He did a quick step jump off of the tree trunk, caught a branch and pulled himself up into the dry branches praying that they wouldn’t snap.
As he climbed he made sure to stick to the bigger branches and tried not to make to much noise. He looked towards where he had last heard the march and it only took a few seconds noticed five soldiers searching the area. It seemed like they were taking their time and performing a thorough search. That was both good and bad. Bad because they knew something was there, good because they didn’t know exactly where or what it was. Moving would buy themselves time but that’s all, the soldiers would eventually find their tracks and once again that left Blint seeing himself getting shot as he slept. He still didn’t like that idea. Since everything was dead that meant they couldn’t jump from tree to tree. The risk of the braches breaking was to high. So that meant the only real choice they had was to either find some way to mislead the search party or stay and fight. Blint couldn’t think of any good way to mislead them so he was left with fighting. Hopefully Lightning had a better idea.
Running out of time Blint made his way down the tree a bit faster. He jumped from his perch and caught himself on one of the lower braches with is prosthesis. He silently cursed when the branch groaned then cracked. Thankfully it didn’t break but with that crack it might as well have. He dropped to the ground and quickly explained what he saw. Knowing that they were probably coming this way now. Again he silently cursed himself as words flew out of his mouth. ”We have five soldiers coming this way. They’re not exactly sure where we are, but they know that something is in this area. They probably think that it’s the Lobos they lost. So unless you can think of someway to lead them away, we‘re about to have a fight on our hands.” Blint hoped this pink haired soldier had something up her sleeve, but if she didn’t he would hold his own just like he said he would.
